Mr. Mambo wears his pain, his rage and his humor closer to the surface; he’s a slightly less compelling musical presence, but a more lucid storyteller.

…the play’s slight excesses can easily be forgiven, especially since women’s experience seems to have evaporated almost entirely from movie screens as a subject worthy of illumination through entertainment. (How apt that Meg Ryan, famed for simulating an orgasm on screen in a more fruitful era for Hollywood actresses, was spotted at a preview.) “In the Next Room” is a true novelty: a sex comedy designed not for sniggering teenage boys — or grown men who wish they were still sniggering teenage boys — but for adults with open hearts and minds.
”

-
Theater Review - ‘In the Next Room, or the vibrator play’ - Beyond Electricity, Toward Female Emancipation, at Lyceum - NYTimes.com

Why can’t she take a simple joke; never mind that this misogyny is the basis of domestic violence, and rape. The speaker was only reaffirming a secondary class status for women and therefore; his language is not deemed harmful. Women that react with anger are quickly disciplined and silenced, because it is assumed that femininity should be submissive in the face of attack. This is the patriarchal ideal.”

-
Womanist Musings | Honouring the Rage

The entire post is worth a read, and there are several passages a lot more powerful than this one, but this is something I deal with regularly, and why it is hurtful is such a simple concept that I cannot for the life of me understand why the men in my life just. don’t. get. it — other than the obvious reason that taking the time to understand this requires the acknowledgment of one’s privilege, and a true commitment to equality means a willingness to let go of it.

As someone who has basically every form of privilege except male privilege, I don’t understand what is so hard about this. I don’t have patience with men about this stuff because I don’t expect members of marginalized groups to which I don’t belong to have patience with me. I don’t expect them to educate me on exactly where I’m going wrong — knowing that I’ve inadvertently said something hurtful to others is enough of a prompt for me to educate myself. I don’t tell people of color that casual racism is no big deal and that they need to choose their battles. I don’t accuse people with marginalized bodies of attacking me every time they point out why an offhand remark I’ve made is deeply problematic. I don’t overtly assert my white or class privilege in an effort to impress other rich white people. (Impressing rich white people is of far less importance to me than being a good ally to the oppressed.) When someone call me on my privilege, my response is simple: 1) Actively listen to what the other person says. 2) Identify my internal sources of resistance to his/her message. 3) Accept that I have personal prejudices that inform the things I do, think, and say. 4) Remind myself that in this situation, I am not the expert on what oppression looks like. 5) Empathize with the other person. 6) Remember what I learned for the next time the subject comes up.

In short, it is not that fucking hard.
